Job Title: Groundskeeper

General Job Description:
Under supervision, to perform routine grounds maintenance and general gardening work; and to perform related work as required.
Experience or training required:
Knowledge of: Basic tools, materials, equipment and practices of routine groundskeeping work; good work habits; basic chemicals and fertilizers; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
Ability to: Perform general grounds maintenance and routine gardening work; use hand and power tools of gardening and groundskeeping working safely; learn to use chemicals and fertilizers properly; perform heavy manual labor; operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; understand and carry out oral and written instruction; establish and maintain effective proactive relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates and ability to perform the duties of the position: Graduation from high school or the equivalent. A typical qualifying entrance background is informal training in groundskeeping work; or experience performing grounds work or other manual labor; or experience at or equivalent to experience as a Custodian in the Carson City School District, wherein the incumbent has acquired the knowledge and abilities listed above.
Licenses or Certificates Required:
Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent certificate, a valid driver's license issued by the state of residence, and an original Social Security Card.
The Job Functions:
Positions in this class involve work that seldom varies and is performed according to established procedures. A major portion of the incumbent's time in this class is spent in performing unskilled work. Incumbents may, as the need arises, be assigned to carry out certain duties which require such skills as pruning, preparing fields and handling of chemicals under the close directions of higher level personnel.
Essential Job Functions:
Cultivate, waters and trims lawns, shrubs, hedges, trees and flowers; operates edgers, power clippers, small mowers, sprayers and other grounds maintenance equipment and hand tools; sprays flowers, shrubs and weeds; drags and fills playground and athletic field areas; assists in the planting, transplanting, fertilizing and removing of plants and shrubs; uses hand tools to work soil and remove weeds, drags and fills playground and athletic field areas; assists in the planting, transplanting, fertilizing and removing of plants and shrubs; uses hand tools to work soil and remove weeds, undergrowth and debris from school grounds and landscaped areas; sweeps, vacuums and blows walks, driveways, parking lots and other areas; picks up paper and rubbish; moves furniture, supplies and equipment; performs general maintenance duties incidental to grounds keeping activities, such as assisting in the erection and repair of fences, painting and burning lines on athletic fields, tracks and courts; may be required to perform simple and routine pool maintenance such as skimming, vacuuming and cleaning; may make minor adjustments to pool filters, pumps and chlorinators; and performs related work as required.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Strength: Heavy Work - Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Incumbent typically works outside exposed to extreme cold and heat. May work in conditions of dust, fumes, gas and odors with poor ventilation. May be required to wear rain gear, snow gear, eye, ear and face protection, respirators and back support. Incumbent must be in good physical condition and must take a physical examination at the District's expense. Must report to work on campusassigned site.
