A client of Apex Systems in the energy and utility sector is hiring an Estimating Engineer to lead cost estimation for utility-scale infrastructure projects, with a strong focus on substation builds and upgrades. This position plays a crucial role in capital planning, project budgeting, and grid interconnection efforts.
Job title: Estimating Engineer
Pay rate: Negotiable, up to $120,000 annually with PTO and benefits
Location: Must be onsite in Reno, NV, no exceptions, relo assistance available if needed
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop detailed cost estimates and budgets for utility projects
- Interpret one-line diagrams, design drawings, and engineering studies
- Conduct material take-offs and sequence construction planning
- Maintain historical cost databases and support multi-year financial forecasting
- Collaborate with engineering, asset management, and project delivery teams
- Analyze internal versus external build options
- Ensure accurate documentation and regulatory compliance
- Engineering degree from an accredited institution
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience with PE license, or 8+ years without PE
- Proven experience estimating substation projects within the utility sector
- Strong grasp of cost modeling principles and Excel proficiency
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and scoping documents
- Familiarity with grid integration and interconnection processes
- PE license
- Transmission line, civil, or protection/control design
- Breaker specs, steel/tariff pricing, contractor bid evaluation
- Interconnection customer negotiations
- Knowledge of unit-based estimating frameworks
