The Nevada State Public Health Laboratory (NSPHL) at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine invites applications for the role of Director, Environmental Laboratory Division.
The Environmental Laboratory Division Director is a working supervisory position responsible for overall management, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance of the Environmental Laboratory at the NSPHL. The Director oversees daily operations across multiple specialized sectionsincluding EPA Chemistry, CDC Wastewater Surveillance, Chemical Terrorism Response (LRN-C), and FDA Food Radiochemistryensuring all functions meet federal, State, and local requirements. This role performs routine analytical testing, supervises laboratory personnel, and coordinates training and professional development to maintain technical excellence and regulatory readiness. The Director provides leadership in developing and sustaining Nevada's infrastructure for environmental hazard surveillance and public health emergency response. The position advances innovative testing methodologies that address emerging public health needs while delivering critical data and analytical insights to inform evidence-based policy and decision-making. In collaboration with NSPHL leadership and statewide partners, the Director strengthens Nevada's environmental public health capacity through strategic planning, scientific presentation, and technical guidance to public health professionals and stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in leading laboratory science as a working supervisor, including development of staff, providing coordinated support for public health outbreak events, lab and regulatory protocol compliance, and competency in departmental test methods. Ability to collaborate internally and externally with a variety of agencies and communities, communicate and implement strategic initiatives, and develop training programs are key communication competencies. A record of administrative oversight across various lab functions, including grant and cost analysis, staff competency, grant and State agency reporting, and equipment acquisition and maintenance must be demonstrated.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree and four years of related professional work experience OR
Master's Degree and two years of related professional work experience
Relevant Experience: Complex chemical instrumentation operations/troubleshooting; compliance, licensing, quality assurance and accreditation; lab management and supervision
