DESCRIPTION

The County is seeking a seasonal Parks Maintenance Assistant to support the care, safety and appearance of our parks, athletic fields, and recreational facilities. This position plays a vital role in maintaining the outdoor spaces enjoyed by residents and visitors throughout the season. The ideal candidate enjoys hands-on, outdoor work, takes pride in keeping public spaces clean, safe and works well as part of a team dedicated to quality service and community stewardship.
Seasonal positions are temporary roles with an approximate duration of six months. Start dates and length of employment may vary based on operational needs. No benefits.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Mows, trims, edges, fertilizes, and irrigates parks, playing fields and other landscaped areas; weeds, prunes, mulches, fertilizes, and sprays trees, plants and shrubbery; prepares soil for planting; seeds and re-sods lawn areas; plants trees, seedlings and shrubs.
  • Installs, repairs and maintains irrigation systems; adjusts irrigation controllers.
  • Inspects assigned areas; corrects or reports safety hazards; cleans and maintains park grounds, athletic fields, campsites, paved areas and paths; grooms and prepares ball fields and other park facilities.
  • Mixes and applies herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides.
  • Maintains buildings and facilities; empties trash and performs litter control; cleans restrooms, horse stalls, fire pits, storage rooms and shops.
  • Performs basic building repair work; may paint facilities and perform graffiti removal; maintains drinking fountains.
  • Maps noxious weeds using handheld GPS equipment.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power landscaping tools and equipment, including hand and riding mowers, tractors, spreaders, edgers, blowers, trimmers, chainsaws, rakes, shovels, hoes, brooms and other tools; operates trucks, trailers and tractors with attachments.
  • Observes safe work methods and uses safety equipment; secures worksites from safety hazards as necessary; attends safety meetings.
  • Responds to questions and complaints from the public; collects fees; informs public on rules and regulations.
  • Maintains basic records of work performed.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
  • Uses County vehicle to perform various tasks related to job duties.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
  • Contributes effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities.
QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Position requires a High School diploma or GED; one (1) year of experience with horticultural landscape maintenance ; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:
  • Nevada Restricted Use Pesticide certification within one (1) year of date of employment.
  • CPR and First Aid certification within six (6) months of date of employment.
  • OSHA 10 Certification within six (6) months of date of employment.
  • Valid Driver's License.
WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration; frequently requires working in high/precarious places and exposure to hazardous chemicals, electrical currents, gases, dust and noxious odors; occasionally requires exposure to wet/humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens (may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment).

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Douglas County provides benefits to full-time employees. Benefits are prorated for part-time employees working 20-29 hours per week. Part-time employees working 19 hours or less, as well as on-call employees, are not eligible for benefits.

No Nevada State income tax.

Retirement - Public Employees' Retirement System of Nevada (PERS)
Douglas County contributes 36.75% of an eligible regular member and 50% of an eligible Police and Fire member's salary for retirement.

Deferred Compensation Plans - Employees have the option to participate in a deferred compensation program through , which is funded by the employee.

Compensation
Douglas County uses a Pay for Performance compensation system, where employees receive annual performance evaluations and may be eligible for merit-based salary increases. Qualified employees can earn up to a 3% merit increase on their anniversary date, and may also receive an annual Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) during the first pay period of each fiscal year, based on the Consumer Price Index, up to a maximum of 5%. In addition, eligible employees who demonstrate exceptional, above-and-beyond performance may receive further compensation through the County's Recognition of Excellence Program.
