Thrift Store Associate

Part-time, non-exempt

The Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe is dedicated to saving and improving the lives of pets through adoptions, community spay/neuter services, and humane education programs

HSTT's Thrift Shop is a nonprofit thrift boutique offering quality second-hand and vintage items to benefit animals being cared for and supported by HSTT. The shop will have a curated selection of gently used and vintage clothing, pet-related goods, household goods, small home décor, artwork and jewelry, in addition to low-cost brand new items.

Summary: The Thrift Shop Store Associate is responsible for some facets of the retail store's operations including, but not limited to, filling in as manager on duty on days when the Thrift Shop General Manager is not there, the daily operation of HSTT's retail area including overseeing volunteers that are scheduled to work on those days, inventory controls, register transactions, etc., while maintaining the highest level of customer service and facilitating a safe and healthy working and shopping environment for all.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities: This job description reflects the assignment of essential functions; it does not proscribe or restrict the tasks that may be assigned.
• Help run the registers and the receiving area, and represent the HSTT brand by maintaining the highest level of customer service.
• Oversee the day-to-day operations for the HSTT Thrift Store when Managers are not present. Must balance the workload between daily store duties and assisting customers on the sales floor, and provide a pleasant and welcoming environment for all.
• Support and oversee HSTT Thrift Shop volunteers when management is not in.
• Responsible for the proper accounting and banking of cash receipts at the end of the business day when the GM is not in. Safeguard cash at all times.
• Enforce pricing policies (one price/no haggle) and recommended strategies for sales promotions to maximize sales.
• Work with the GM to keep a system in place for purging items from the shop to ensure a constant flow of new inventory.
• Help create an attractive shopping environment, including neatly stacking, shelving, hanging clothing garments, and other donated goods.
• Ensure the shop is always organized and clean, which includes sweeping, vacuuming, mopping floors, dusting shelves, cleaning bathrooms, washing windows, etc.
• Resolve all issues that arise from customers or volunteers (conflicts, complaints, etc.) when management is not on duty.
• Ensure that all thrift store operations follow all Federal, State, and local safety regulations and laws, and HSTT policies and procedures, and ensure a safe environment for all customers, staff, and volunteers.
• Report safety hazards, property damage, and personal injuries to Thrift Shop GM, Community Engagement Director, and CEO immediately and work collaboratively to resolve issues.

Education and Experience:
• Minimum education includes a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Minimum of 1-year experience in retail sales. Thrift shop experience strongly preferred.
• Ability to use a cash register and teach others how to use one, which includes void transactions, discounts, tax-exempt sales, etc.
• Excellent math/accounting skills and familiarity with working with cash receipts. Computer fluency in MS Office, Excel, or other donor database software, web applications, social media, and knowledge about the role of technology and electronic payment systems.
• Familiarity with nonprofit organizations, animal welfare, and volunteerism.

• A team player with an attitude of service and the ability to motivate others.
• Must possess a valid unrestricted driver's license with a driving record acceptable by our insurance carrier and be bondable.
• Highly motivated toward the welfare and humane treatment of all animals; understands the lifesaving importance of finding homes for shelter animals.

Physical Demands: This work is performed in an office, shelter, and/or retail environment; requires workers to walk or stand for long periods; to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; to bend; to reach; to hold, grasp, and turn objects; and to use fingers to operate computer keyboards. The work requires the ability to speak clearly and communicate effectively with customers.
